The Truth About Abs Review
The Truth About Abs Review: The following is an extensive review of the e-book The Truth About Six Pack Abs by Mike Geary.
Why is Truth About Abs so Famous?
Just who is this Mike Geary guy anyway?! That’s probably what you’re thinking. Am I right? Well, that’s what I was thinking…
I wasn’t about to read yet another book of condescending fitness advice from a know-nothing, fad-orientated, waste of space. I know that sounds mean, but if you’ve been trying to get fit for a while now with little to no results, then I have a feeling you know exactly what I’m talking about.
As it turned out, Mike Geary, author of The Truth About Six Pack Abs, is a Certified Nutrition Specialist and a Certified Personal Trainer specializing in body fat reduction strategies. He also describes himself as a man of “average genetics”—which he has obviously overcome. No, he’ll never be the cover model on a muscle mag, but don’t you wish you had a body that looks as good as his…? And thus begins The Truth About Abs Review!

Yes, But Can It Work For Women Too?
Mike Geary himself put it best: “Although many of the exercises, training routines, and discussion within this manual may come off in a masculine tone sometimes, it is all equally as effective for body fat education and muscle toning for women as it is for men.”
And, if you look closely at the cover of the book itself, two out of three of those well-toned bodies belong to women. Though, if you’re like I am, you’ll probably want to aim to look more like the girl on the left. The girl in the middle is a bit scary. But that’s just this reviewer’s opinion. If you choose to take your ab workout that far and that’s what makes you happy—and I’m sure you could succeed in doing so with the help of this book!—then more power(!) to you! You will get no complaints from the author of the Truth About Abs Review.
Lovely Lady Abs
How Much Will I Have to Invest in Equipment?
Little to no equipment is needed, though Geary himself admits in the introduction that your results will come more quickly and easily if you do have access to a gym (or a “fairly well-equipped home gym”). Fortunately, the only two things you really need are a stability ball (one of those giant inflatable balls you see so often these days) and a nice classic set of dumbbells. With those two pieces of equipment, you can perform 95% of the exercises. And it’s fairly easy to find a way to convert the exercises you “can’t” do into something you “can” do. Example: Every exercise that requires a barbell can easily be converted to an exercise using two dumbbells.
Geary also gives an overview of the inner-workings of the body, detailing the muscles (complete with textbook-style diagrams) that are put to use whenever we use what are generalized as our “abs.” But, don’t worry, he keeps it laid back, using language and visuals that most of us can relate to: “Whenever you suck in your stomach (like a guy at the beach trying to hide his gut), you are using the transversus abdominis to perform that movement.” Yeah…we’ve all seen that guy at the beach, am I right?
An Ab Workout Without Crunches?!
"As the author of this Truth About Abs Review, I was shocked that there very little emphasis is put on crunches!" - Geary states several times that crunches and similar exercises focusing solely on abdominal take up only “5-10 minutes per workout.” He also says that sit-ups should be avoided entirely! Personally, I wasn’t surprised. I knew all those PE teachers during elementary school were full of it. Sit-ups. Pssh! Thank goodness someone had the guts to call out this exercise for what it is: Terrible.
Chapter 3.5 of The Truth About Six Pack Abs goes into extensive detail on ab-centric exercises and how to use them more efficiently. Geary also has some fun suggestions for fitting these exercises into your routine. As he’s also the founder of “Busy Man Fitness,” he has an acute understanding of just how time-constrained we can be when it comes to getting fit.
Yep. Those are abs, all right!
Learning How to Exercise the Right Way
Something else I’d like to mention in this Truth About Abs Review: Mike Geary takes the time, again and again, to stress the importance of proper form. “Yes, doing [the exercises] correctly will make them much harder, but also more effective,” he says. Anyone who’s been around a teenage boy with a set of dumbbells has most likely been exposed to the awkward painful curve to his back as he recklessly swings the dumbbell upward claiming he’s doing “bicep curls” when what he’s really doing is riding the bullet train to a lower back sprain.
Geary’s attention to proper form—when it would be easier to let readers do whatever they think “feels good” at the time—shows a glimpse of much-appreciated integrity (and gives more credibility to his trainer background). If you take away nothing else from this Truth About Abs Review, remember this: Safety first. Always.
The Exercises Themselves
Now, don’t be daunted by the first set of exercises. I’m not sure why, but Geary decided to start off the series of exercises with hanging leg raises. Now, unless you’re Michael Keaton in the first Batman movie and have a machine for this in your bedroom (I’m not the only one who remembers that scene, right?), you’re probably not going to have the equipment to do this at home. Also, for a beginner, you might look at the pictures accompanying this set of exercises and go “Gyaaaaaaaaaah. There’s no way I can do that!” These exercises are legitimate—they will definitely work your abs—but you might consider skipping these pages.
I know that if I had dwelled on them for any longer than I did, I might have been too discouraged to continue… Which would have been awful because, fortunately, the rest of the exercises presented are everything you’d expect them to be: Simple and effective.
A rare Mike Geary in his natural habitat... Shhhh...
Food As Fuel (Even for the Ladies!)
Starting in Chapter 4, Geary begins showing off this background as a nutritionist. Turns out there’s actually some truth to all that “diet and exercise” stuff that’s been floating around! Mike Geary speaks out against “fad diets” and focuses more on maintaining a sensible caloric intake for an individual’s weight, height, age, and activity level (Don’t worry: The formula is easier to figure out than you might think).
Geary even offers a special shout-out to the ladies: “Most times, as long as the caloric intake is controlled, some of my heaviest lifting female clients are actually some of the leanest and sexiest. So the message to the ladies out there is this… stop being afraid to lift weights… it will NOT ‘bulk you up!’” I hate to admit it, but, as a woman who doesn’t like a lot of “bulk” myself, it was like he was speaking directly to me!
Touting the Benefits of Free Weights
Before I forget, one more thing I’d like to mention in my all inclusive Truth About Abs Review, is the fact that Geary, unlike many workout guides I’ve read, stresses the use of free weights over that of machines. “Bottom line: If you want better results from your workouts, stick to free weights for the majority of your routines.” This shouldn’t really come as a surprise considering I mentioned at the beginning of this review that most of the exercises in The Truth About Six Pack Abs can be done from the comfort of your own home.
However, I’d like to give props to Geary for taking the time to explain why free weights are such a valuable training tool rather than taking it for granted that we’re all sheep who will simply do as we’re told with no explanation. Mike Geary dedicates an entire chapter to this subject!
One last picture of sexy, sexy abs on my truth about abs review...
Cardio = Zzzzzzzzzzzzz…
Here’s another section that I found fascinating: “All of those hours upon boring hours of repetitive low to moderate intensity cardio training sessions are not the best way to lose body fat and reveal your abs.” Okay, I mostly liked that he referred to cardio as “boring.” Because, let’s really be honest, no matter how many times your peppy friend or ridiculously expensive trainer described cardio as “fun” or “exhilarating” to you in the past…weren’t you bored out of your mind? (I know I was).
Geary explains the problem with standard cardio training (yes, there are problems other than the whole “boring” factor!) and, better still, explains how to fix these problems. I’m not going to spoil it for you here in my Truth About Abs Review. You’re going to want to read this for yourself!
