When it comes to nutrition, junk food should not be eaten every day. Every once in awhile as an indulgence would probably be okay, but for the most part, junk food needs to stay out of your diet. Here are ten ways to stop eating junk food:

1. Ask yourself what the reason is that you want to stop eating junk food. Is it because you want less fat in your diet? Better health? Lower cholesterol? To lose weight? Have a reason and write it down on paper and look at it every day. This is a constant reminder of your goal.

2. Make a plan. Quitting junk food is a lifestyle change. Your plan should include such things as the foods you will eat, what you will cook, and what you will eat at work. Plan everything – your meals, grocery list – everything. Having a plan in place helps with temptations if you know it well.

3. Be confident. It is easy but just takes some work. It CAN be done.

4. Take action. Do your own grocery shopping and cook for your family according to your plan. Stick with it.

5. Get into sports. Not only will this help keep you busy and energized, it will also help your muscles and body tissue. Simple exercise such as strength training is recommended to start your fitness program.


6. Choose your environment. Your environment influences your habits. Remove the junk food from your cabinets, freezer, and refrigerator. Stop eating out and don’t bring junk food home for temptation.

7. Enjoy your food. Experiment with new foods and get used to cooking delicious, healthy recipes that you can go back to. Invest in a few healthy meals cookbooks.

8. Eating 90% healthy of the time is sufficient. Make one afternoon/evening a week for you to eat a little bit of junk food. Eliminating it completely from your diet without something to look forward to could possibly set you back.

9. Control yourself. When you’re tempted, refer back to your reason for quitting.

10. Remember that if you do “fall off the horse"; so to speak, you aren’t a failure. Get back up, brush yourself off, and try again. Rome wasn’t built in a day.
